KUCHING - The Northern Zone contingent had been crowned as the overall champion of Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) 2017  which ends today (December 17) and is entitled to the bragging rights as the best contender after bagging 78 gold, 59 silver and 37 bronze medals in the 4-day championship.

Coming in second placing was South Zone contingent with 68 gold, 54 silver and 49 bronze medals followed by third place with 23, 46 silver and 51 bronze medals while the Western Zone finished fourth with 16 gold, 20 silver and 24 bronze medals.

The closing and presentation of championship trophy handing ceremony was officiated by YB Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Sarawak at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya.

On hand to receive champion's trophy was Northern Zone chef-de-mission, Tuan Haji Muhammad Yakup Bin Kari, the Resident of Bintulu who was satisfied with the athletes' achievements despite the modest 31 gold medal target set earlier prior to the event.

The Northern Zone contingent was represented by athletes from Miri, Bintulu and Limbang who had fiercely mount a serious challenge against their fellow competitors from other zones but they had been ahead in the medal charts since the second day of SukSar 2017.

Also present at the closing ceremony were Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak who represented Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Minister, YB Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
